drugs containing pioglitazone

Pioglitazone is the active ingredient in the diabetes medication Actos® and is also sold in combination with metformin (Actoplus Met®, Actoplus Met XR®) and glimepiride (Duetact®). From January 2010 through October 2010, approximately 2.3 million prescriptions of pioglitazone-containing medications were filled from outpatient retail pharmacies.

Pioglitazone-containing products are among the highest grossing pharmaceuticals currently on the market. In 2010, Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited sold $4.87 billion worth of Actos, and continues to sell the product in spite of recent warnings from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The “Safe” Alternative

Used primarily for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, pioglitazone helps the body to use insulin more effectively and lower high blood sugar. Common side effects include:

  • Anxiety, nervousness, or difficulty concentrating
  • Blurred vision
  • Breathing problems
  • Diarrhea
  • Drowsiness
  • Muscle pain
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Skin rash or hives

Products containing pioglitazone, such as Actos, have been recommended by Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited and health care professionals as safe alternatives to the prescription diabetes drug Avandia®, which was also found to have serious health risks. However, recent studies have indicated that Actos may increase the risk of bladder cancer by more than 40 percent in individuals who took it for more than one year.

Bladder Cancer and Pioglitazone

Due to the potential risks associated with taking medications containing pioglitazone, many people who took Actos before being diagnosed with bladder cancer are coming forward to seek compensation for their suffering.
